Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as MP for Clacton to trigger a by-election after reports surfaced that he struck a secret deal to return to politics months before the 2024 general election. The move follows intensifying scrutiny over a £5 million undisclosed gift and ties to a convicted fraudster.
The resignation is an attempt by Farage to let the voters of Clacton judge his actions, which he describes as a people versus the establishment by-election

The Secret Deal and the £5 Million Gift
At the center of the controversy are reports from the Sunday Times indicating that Farage was negotiating a return to the political frontline as early as March 2024. This contradicts his public claims that he had no intention of returning to politics until June 2024. According to the reports, Farage worked with George Cottrell to negotiate a deal with then-party leader Richard Tice.
The terms of this arrangement reportedly stipulated that once Farage assumed leadership, Reform UK would repay or write off more than £1 million in outstanding loans provided by Tice’s company. This timeline is critical because it overlaps with the receipt of a £5 million personal gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne in April 2024.
Under parliamentary rules, newly elected MPs must register relevant financial interests and gifts received within the 12 months preceding their election. Farage has defended his failure to declare the sum by claiming he was acting as an influencer
and media personality, rather than a politician, between 2021 and June 3, 2024.

Financial industry sources told the Guardian that transactions involving Reform’s leadership have been referred to the National Crime Agency. Scotland Yard detectives have also interviewed Cottrell and his mother, Fiona Cottrell, under criminal caution. Investigators found that George Cottrell transferred more than $2m (£1.5m) to his mother in 2024, with these sums arriving shortly before she made substantial donations to Reform UK.
This pattern raises significant legal questions, as UK election law requires that donations to political parties come from permissible donors, such as registered UK voters or UK-registered companies.
The Clacton By-Election Strategy
