(Web Desk) A school building in Nigeria was destroyed, killing 22 students taking exams and over 100 injured.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, the accident happened on Friday morning during school hours and there were about 1,000 students in the school at the time of the accident.

According to reports, 154 students were buried under the debris after the building collapsed, out of which 132 students were pulled out of the debris. Rescue authorities have confirmed the death of 22 students.

Debris removers continued to try to save the children while the parents on the spot also ran to find their children.

Authorities have so far said only that many students have died, but an AFP reporter found five bodies in one hospital morgue and 11 in another, all of them wearing school uniforms.

Injured student Walia Ibrahim, who was with his mother at the hospital bed, told AFP that it was not more than 5 minutes after I entered the class when I heard a voice and then I found myself here. They said that we are many children in the class and we were giving our exams.

The National Emergency Management Agency said that several students were killed when the two-story building Housing St. Academy collapsed, but the agency did not provide the number of students or other details.

Chika Obioha, a local man at the scene, told AFP that he saw at least eight bodies at the scene, while dozens of people were injured.

An AFP correspondent said they saw 11 bodies at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital mortuary and 5 bodies at the Our Lady of Apostles Hospital mortuary in Jose. At least 15 children were rescued while the injured students are undergoing treatment.

Building collapses are a frequent occurrence in Africa’s most populous country due to lax enforcement of building construction standards and the use of substandard materials.

In 2021, at least 45 people were killed when a high-rise building under construction collapsed in Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos. According to a researcher at the University of South Africa, at least 152 buildings have collapsed in Lagos since 2005.
