The general did not give details about the plan, but noted that the principles of the transition will be determined within a month as a result of the dialogue that the junta plans to organize.

Tchiani addressed the citizens against the backdrop of a visit to Niamey by leaders of the Economic Community of West African Countries, which includes Niger. On August 19, representatives of the organization met with the deposed president Mohammad Bazum. The junta’s agreement to accept the mission can be seen as readiness for negotiations, Reuters believes.

The other day, a high-ranking representative of the mentioned African group of countries said that the rapid response contingent of the community is ready to launch a military operation to overthrow the junta, but the priority is a peaceful solution to the crisis.

At the end of July, a military coup took place in Niger. The junta led by Abdurakhman Tchiani seized power in the country. Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazum, was arrested. The putschists threatened to punish him if an armed attempt was made to free the head of state.

In early August, Bazum appealed to the United States and the international community for help in restoring order in the country. He expressed his concern that due to the actions of the rebels, the entire West African Sahel region “may come under the influence of Russia through the “Wagner” PMC.”

Supporters of the coup in Niger repeatedly took to the streets with Russian flags. At the same time, Moscow also officially condemned the actions of the junta.

PVK “Wagner” is present in a number of African countries, in particular in Mali on the border with Niger, where a coup also took place earlier. The military junta of Mali pursues a pro-Russian policy.
