This group of women in Alappuzha are not the ones who took to the streets to create a revolution in one day. These nine women are guarding the area where they live. This night squad of women is taking to the streets in Alappuzha Velorvattam to catch thieves. A team of 9 women, led by the Chaitanya Residents Association, patrol the area at night. The work of this Women’s Night Squad is to advance the message of women’s empowerment.

For the past four years this group of women has been in the area as night watchmen. The women guard the houses in the area from Moolepally Junction to Murthinkal. Kovid was temporarily suspended but is now active again. They land 3 days a week. The men’s squad will go down on other days.

Vice President Ashma Joseph said police and other members of the organization would be notified on mobile phones if they saw thieves or attackers. President Leela John and other members Dr. Anne Jacob, Chitra S. Kammath, Asha Sunil, Vidya Yogesh, Aniamma George and Jyothi Govind are leading the party. They work in various fields such as doctor, government officials, chartered accountant and nurse. Women who go on night patrols can also get chuck coffee from their homes as an incentive.
