Good news for LivAssured, developer of the Nightwatch, a smart bracelet that can detect (nocturnal) epilepsy attacks and alerts parents and caregivers. Recent research by SEIN, the expertise center for epilepsy and sleep medicine, shows that the bracelet reduced stress among parents and caregivers. Oost NL invested in the company in 2018 from the Gelderland Innovation and Energy Fund.

About 100,000 Dutch people suffer from epilepsy every year. In about 30% of the cases, it concerns a severe attack that requires medical attention. Epileptic seizures come unexpectedly and lead to unsafe situations. Most of these attacks occur at night and often go undetected causing medical complications. As a result, parents often experience nocturnal stress. They therefore have a great need for good and reliable attack detection.

The study of 53 families in the home situation showed that a significant reduction in stress among caregivers could be measured within just two months of use. The bracelet gave few false alarms and its use led to a decrease in healthcare costs.

“For many of the attack detection devices, there is little evidence that they work properly. And the research that has been done before, mainly took place in hospitals,” said researcher Anouk van Westhrenen at the SEIN website. “This is the only study in the world in which a large group of children has been studied in their home situation for a longer period of time.” Neurologist Roland Thijs also mentions this: “This research is very valuable, because with this data we know how the NightWatch works in real life at home. This gives a much more reliable picture because the children sleep in their own bed, at their parents’ home and not in a clinic.

SEIN’s research was carried out in collaboration with Kempenhaeghe, Maastricht UMC and Utrecht UMC. The entire research is here to find back.

LivAssured developed the NightWatch in collaboration with neurologists and the Epilepsy Fund. With the investment in 2018, LivAssured aimed to further develop its product and roll it out internationally. In 2021 the company was standing fifth in the Innovation Top 100 of the Chamber of Commerce
