“The draw forced me to face a very difficult opponent. In each of the 4 meetings I had, I fought against strong and titled boxers.

As reported by İdman.biz, boxer of the Azerbaijani national team Nijat Huseynov (51 kg), who won a license for the Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024, announced this to the website of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation.

Our two-time European champion appreciated his performance at the 1st World Olympic Qualification Tournament, held in Busto Arsizio, Italy, where he qualified for the French capital. He said that before the competition he had only one goal:

“Our team was very well prepared. I am in good shape now and was confident going into Italy. My goal was only to reach the semi-finals and return home with a license. As for my fights, each of them was difficult. At the start I knocked out Indian World Championship bronze medalist Deepak Deepak, followed by Georgian World Championship finalist and European champion Sahil Alahverdovi.”

According to Huseynov, he reached the 1/8 finals and was confident that he would win the fight against the Armenian Rudolf Garboyan, European vice-champion:

“Because I beat him once in the final of the U22 European Championship. When I looked into his eyes, I felt that he was afraid of me. In the end, I won that fight confidently.”

Nijat beat Roscoe Hill (USA) in the quarter finals thanks to his persistence:

“After losing to him in the first round, I pulled myself together. Before him, I defeated the strongest. I thought only about winning and getting a license. Luckily, I persevered against another World Championship finalist and won.”

The team leader emphasized that he will prepare for Paris 2024:

“My goal is to get into better shape and win the first gold medal in boxing for Azerbaijan. I will only think about winning the Olympics.”

Let us note that Murad Allahverdiev (80 kg) and Magomed Abdullaev (+92 kg) formalized their participation in the Olympics before Huseynov.
