The issue of the lack of resources and responsibilities from the local government and, at the same time, the enormous problems facing our islands in the field of health and the basic issues of communication and connection with the mainland, was highlighted by Giorgos Nikitiadis, Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese PASOK Movement for Change, during the during his greeting, at the General Assembly of the Regional Union of Municipalities of the South Aegean. The meeting was held on Friday, February 16 in Athens.
“We have problems on the islands. People are suffering on the islands. Hospitals are in a state of disrepair, transport is tragic. Under no circumstances should we leave these things aside,” emphasized Mr. Nikitiadis. Addressing the present Mayors and councilors, the Member of Parliament of Dodecanese noted “You are the first to accept problems, requests and complaints and the world makes you responsible without being responsible for problems caused by the central state”.
Mr. Nikitiadis, addressing the Minister of the Interior Ms. Niki Kerameos raised the most important issues of financial resources and the responsibilities that the local self-government does not have, stressing “Self-government without assigning responsibilities and securing resources is not self-government. We in PASOK will continue to support such self-government, we will continue to fight for the municipalities to have as many responsibilities as possible and of course as many resources as possible”.
The Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese announced that in the next few days he will meet with the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Vroutsis, asking him the issues facing the sports associations of our islands. At the same time, Mr. Nikitiadis noted that important ancient figures of antiquity such as Diagoras and Kallipateira could be sources of inspiration so that they are taken into account in future actions in order for the South Aegean to be the herald of the sporting ideal throughout the world.
