With the D850, Nikon’s engineers were able to let loose and finally showcase the full extent of their talent. Irreproachable in terms of handling, image quality, responsiveness, and even modernity, it would be close to perfection if it weren’t for two or three minor details. For its 100th anniversary, Nikon offers you a photographic monster whose realm extends from studios to the Arctic Circle, passing through photojournalism, weddings, and portraits. Magical.

As an alternative

On the photo side, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is a nice and expensive evolution with an increased definition, Dual Pixel AF technology, a touchscreen LCD, modern connections, top-notch autofocus, and quality construction.

On the video side, 4K is welcome, but one leaves feeling unsatisfied due to the lack of features like exposure and focus assistants.

From a strictly photographic point of view, the 5D Mark IV easily receives a recommendation.

However, four years have passed since the arrival of the 5D Mark III, and the competition has not rested on its laurels, quite the contrary. Surprisingly, it is not in the DSLR realm that the most dangerous rivals can be found, but rather in the mirrorless sector. Indeed, while the technologies are still developing, it must be admitted that Sony and Fujifilm are rapidly renewing their ranges. For instance, Sony’s A7 line has seen no less than 6 bodies emerge in 3 years. These bodies incorporate new and interesting features (completely silent shutter, panoramic mode, 11 fps burst…) in smaller and lighter bodies. Before you decide to purchase a DSLR, and if electronic viewfinders don’t make you nauseous, the mirrorless offerings today present a more than credible alternative.
