Météo-France has issued a new warning against thunderstorms and floods for Thursday 17 October, putting nine departments in the South in orange and causing the closure of schools, particularly in the Alpes-Maritimes.

As a precaution, in this south-eastern department, all facilities that welcome young people, from nurseries to high schools, will remain closed on Thursday, as on 8 October, the prefect announced. In Nice, parks will be closed and the city has taken measures to shelter the homeless. In Gard, school transport has been abolished in the northern half of the territory. In Lozère, school transport is suspended in the south-east of the department.

Cet “episode of heavy rain (…) requires special monitoring due to its intensity and duration” with “uncertainties about the location of the strongest storms and heaviest rainfall”indicates the organization in its 10pm bulletin.

Gard, Lozère and Ardèche, the last three departments still on orange alert for “floods” late on Wednesday afternoon, will be joined on Thursday by the Alpes-Maritimes, Aveyron, Corrèze, Lot, Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Tarn.

Ardèche and Gard will also remain on orange alert for “flooding”, while significant stormy activity is expected in Alpes-Maritimes, Gard and Lozère.

The Cévennes episode therefore continues and more generally “A low pressure system is rising over the country and stormy rainfall will intensify in many regions”according to Météo-France.

Since the beginning of the episode, accumulations have reached 150-200 millimetres, occasionally even 300-350 millimeters in the Cévennes of Lozère. On Wednesday morning, the SNCF decided to completely stop train traffic between Alès (Gard) and Langogne (Lozère) until Friday morning, “for the safety of travelers and to avoid any accidents”.

In the Pyrenees-Atlantiques, precipitation began on Wednesday evening and could lead to significant accumulations in the Basque mountains. In the Maritime Alps, rain is expected starting from Thursday at midday, with a respite expected during the night between Thursday and Friday. Finally, rainfall is expected in Corrèze, Lot, Tarn and Aveyron from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning with possible peaks of around 100 millimeters towards Lot and the west of Aveyron.
