Ninja Theory faces closure after two Xbox acquisition deals collapse

Hellblade developer Ninja Theory is entering staff consultation ahead of a proposed closure after two separate acquisition deals fell through. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty announced the development on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, alongside sweeping structural cuts impacting 268 roles across the gaming division.

Acquisition Deals Collapse and Threaten Cambridge Studio

Ninja Theory now faces a shutdown following the collapse of two separate agreements to secure an independent buyer for the Cambridge-based developer. The studio was one of four smaller Xbox Game Studios teams originally earmarked for divestment during an earlier restructuring initiative led by Xbox leadership.

While sister studios Compulsion Games and Double Fine successfully transitioned back to management independence, and Undead Labs secured a new publisher for State of Decay 3, Ninja Theory remained without a buyer as negotiations broke down.

“Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”

The developer, founded in 2000, has spent more than two decades producing titles ranging from Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West to the psychological action game Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

The Unclear Fate of the Senua Franchise

The threat of closure arrives just months after Microsoft showcased Senua, a new and more expansive entry in the Hellblade series, during the Xbox Games Showcase in June. That timing drew public confusion and scrutiny from industry observers.

According to industry reporting from Game File, the studio revealed the game as part of a strategy to generate investor interest and attract potential buyers before the company was put on the market. With acquisition talks ultimately failing, the future of the Senua project remains uncertain alongside the studio itself.

Sweeping Restructuring and Layoffs Across Xbox Studios

The situation at Ninja Theory forms part of a broader corporate reset that saw 268 additional roles eliminated across Halo Studios, central functions, and first-party teams. The cuts bring the organization roughly three-quarters of the way through a previously announced restructuring plan slated to conclude in June 2027.

  • Activision took over management of the Halo franchise, alongside Sea_of_Thieves and World’s Edge.
  • Halo Studios transitioned into a support role, with future titles to be handled by a purpose-built team separate from Call of Duty development.
  • Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios merged into a single entity dedicated to the Forza and Fable franchises.
  • Bethesda expanded its oversight to include Obsidian Entertainment, which continues work on Fallout projects and Grounded.

Ongoing Consultations and Key Dates to Watch

While Ninja Theory enters a formal staff consultation period under UK employment law, the ultimate outcome has not been finalized. Leadership noted that alternative paths forward are still under review while discussions proceed.

Uncertainty also surrounds the development team at Arkane, where consultations regarding the future of the studio and its Marvel Blade project remain underway and are expected to continue through the end of the year in accordance with local labor regulations.

Xbox leadership plans to address the ongoing workforce changes during an All-Xbox town hall scheduled for October 6, 2026, where executives and studio teams will review progress and discuss the division’s upcoming game lineup.
