Nintendo has announced that it changed the Japanese name of one of the characters that appear in the new film based on the legendary video game ‘Super Mario Bros’, before its premiere this week in the Asian country, allegedly considering it racist.

It is the foreman named Blackie in Japan, first appearing in the video game ‘Wrecking Crew’ in the 1980s. Now will be renamed Spikeas it is known in Europe and the US, the company detailed, without disclosing the reasons for the change.

The change would be due to the fact that the Japanese name of the character refers to a racist insult, since Blackie could be translated into Spanish as ‘Negrito’ and used as a offensive way of referring to dark-skinned people.

The film has already grossed about $377 million worldwide. Among the famous actors who participate in the film in the English version are Chris Pratt, who plays Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who voices Princess Peach.
