Nintendo Fans in Frenzy as New Patent Filings Hint at Possible Switch Successor

26th October 2023 – Rumors of a Switch successor have been circulating for months now, and the excitement has reached a fever pitch with the discovery of some new Nintendo filings. These filings, originally submitted on 11th November 2022, were recently made public on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) website.

Of all the filings, one particular concept has sent Nintendo fans into an instant frenzy. The design resembles a “dual-screen, detachable device” that bears a resemblance to the beloved Nintendo 3DS. While it’s important to remain cautious, the concept designs have sparked excitement among fans who are eager to see what Nintendo has in store.

The official description of the filing reads, “This electronic apparatus comprises a first device and a second device. The first device and the second device can be detachably attached to each other. The first device has a first surface, and a first display and a first connection unit which are positioned on the first surface. The second device has a second surface, a second display that is positioned on the second surface, a second rear surface that is on the reverse side from the second surface, and a second connection unit that is positioned on the second rear surface. The second connection unit can be connected to the first connection unit in a first orientation or in a second orientation that is the reverse from the first orientation. When in a first connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the first orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as to cover the first display. When in a second connection state in which the second connection part has been connected to the first connection part in the second orientation, the second rear surface is positioned so as not to cover the first display.”

In addition to the dual-screen concept, other Nintendo filings hint at a system fan, buttons, and how the screen attaches to the device. However, it’s important to note that these filings and patents do not guarantee the release of a new product or follow-up news. Companies, including Nintendo, often file these applications to protect their concepts and may revisit them later on.

Earlier rumors about a Switch successor did not mention a dual-screen device. Instead, the most recent rumor suggested that select developers were shown a follow-up to the Switch at this year’s Gamescom. Some even claimed that a tech demo for Zelda: Breath of the Wild running at 4K, 60 fps was showcased.

As always, we’ll keep you updated on any significant developments. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on the filing? Let us know in the comments below.
