Nintendo to launch 18+ App for Nintendo Switch Online in Japan

Nintendo, known for its family-friendly gaming experiences, is set to launch an 18+ App for its subscription service Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) in Japan. The App will feature remakes of two classic Nintendo 64 games: “GoldenEye 007” and “Jet Force Gemini”.

The announcement was made in a recent video released on Nintendo Japan’s official YouTube channel. “Jet Force Gemini” is set to be released on NSO stores in Japan on November 21, with “GoldenEye 007” following in January 2023. These games will be available through the $50 per year expansion pack that joins NSO.

While both games are rated “T” overseas, suitable for teenagers aged 13 and above, the Japanese Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) classifies “shooting games” as restricted “Z”, meaning they may not be sold to players under 18 years of age. As a result, Nintendo has had to take measures to ensure compliance with the law, putting “GoldenEye 007” and “Jet Force Gemini” in a separate NSO App for adult players, while underage players will not have access to these games.

This move by Nintendo highlights the company’s commitment to adhering to regional content regulations while still providing a diverse range of gaming experiences for its audience. The launch of the 18+ App also reflects the company’s efforts to cater to a wider demographic of players, including adult gamers who have been eagerly anticipating the return of these classic titles.
