The Union Ministry of Education has officially extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026–27 academic year, according to Skilloutlook. Eligible students can now submit their scholarship applications through the National Scholarship Portal until September 30, 2026.

The scholarship program, implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, awards financial support to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. The primary goal of the scheme is to prevent student dropouts after the elementary level (Class VIII) and encourage recipients to continue their education through the higher secondary level up to Class XII. The scheme provides one lakh fresh scholarships every year, carrying an amount of ₹12,000 per annum per student. Funds are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students via electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.
Revised Schedule and Verification Deadlines
Alongside the extended application deadline, the Ministry of Education has updated the subsequent verification timelines for institutions and district authorities. According to Skilloutlook, the updated schedule includes strict cut-off dates for multi-level application reviews to ensure smooth processing.

Applicants who have already submitted their applications are advised to ensure that their documents are duly reviewed and verified by their respective institute and district nodal officers before the respective deadlines lapse.
Mandatory One-Time Registration and Application Process
For the 2026–27 project year, completing a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal is compulsory before any student can submit an NMMSS form. Applicants must generate a 14-digit OTR using Aadhaar or an Aadhaar Enrolment ID, register a mobile number, complete e-KYC, and perform face authentication using the NSP OTR app and Aadhaar Face RD service. Minors are permitted to use a parent’s Aadhaar consent.
Once the OTR and password are secured, students can log into the portal, choose the NMMSS scheme, confirm their institute details, and upload the necessary documentation. Students with disabilities (PwD) must first sign in to the Unique Disability ID (UDID) portal and provide consent to share their data with the NSP before initiating the application. Furthermore, applicants must ensure that their bank accounts are Aadhaar-seeded, as verified through platforms like NPCI’s BASE.
Eligibility Criteria and Financial Parameters
The NMMSS targets students studying in State Government, Government-aided, and local body schools. To be eligible for the selection test conducted by State or UT governments, students must have passed their Class VII examination with a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade, with a 5% relaxation applicable for SC and ST candidates. Additionally, the parental income ceiling for applicants is set at a maximum of ₹3.50 lakh per annum.
The scholarship is continued through renewal from Classes X to XII. Under revised guidelines, renewal requires students to secure a minimum of 60% marks in Class X (with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST candidates) while obtaining clear promotions from Class IX to X and from Class XI to XII in their first attempt.
