Ukraine wants an international tribunal to judge Russia’s aggression as early as next year

In the seventh month of the war, kyiv intends to create an international tribunal next year to try Russian President Vladimir Putin and those responsible for the invasion of Ukraine, revealed to Agence France-Presse a senior Ukrainian official. This plan for the creation of this tribunal which will have to rule on the “crime of aggression” of Russia is headed by Andriy Smyrnov, deputy director of the presidential cabinet.

“This is the only option to quickly hold accountable the criminals who started the war against Ukraine. The best, fastest and most efficient », said Mr. Smyrnov in an interview with Agence France-Presse. the “crime of aggression” is similar to the concept of “crime against peace” used during the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials at the end of the Second World War.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already begun to investigate the crimes for which it has jurisdiction (genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes) but it cannot take up the charges of “crime of aggression” because neither Moscow nor Kyiv have ratified the Rome Statute establishing it in 2010.

“The world has a short memory: that’s why I would like this tribunal to get to work next year”added Andriy Smyrnov, qui se dit “cautiously optimistic”.
