Shura Amdam Saad al-Otaibi, who introduced the draft, said the amendment was aimed at protecting the flag and the national anthem from being adversely affected and altered. He told Saudi-owned television Al Arabi that the restrictions on the location and timing of the flag-raising would be included.

‘The features of the symbol and the national anthem and when it should be played, he added. The private sector has the right to hoist the national flag after obtaining a permit specifying the shape and size of the flag. Al-Otaibi said all flags used by the private sector must therefore comply with certain restrictions.

He opined that the basic rules of the country, which were established 50 years ago, did not include special rules for the national anthem. The current Saudi national flag was designed 50 years ago in the center of the green flag with the words “Lailaha Illallah, Muhammadur Rasoolullah (there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah) in Arabic” and the image of a sword below it. He said the country has made great strides in all areas since then. He added that the country’s flag, emblem and national anthem need to be modified to coincide with Vision 2030, which is being implemented under the leadership of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Their nature, content, terms of use, and procedures for misuse or misuse will also be clarified. However, no details have been released on what changes are going to come. The need to revise the national flag had been raised before, but no decision had been taken.
