CELEBRITIESAmerican writer Cormac McCarthy has died at the age of 89. This is reported by his publisher. The author won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for ‘The Road’ and wrote the book ‘No Country for Old Men’, which was successfully filmed.

The American writer died of natural causes at his home in Sante Fe, New Mexico. His publisher Penguin Random House reports this based on information from his son, John McCarthy. McCarthy leaves behind two children.

The author has several classics to his name. Such as the well-known book ‘No Country for Old Men’ (2005), which was filmed two years later by the brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. The film received four Oscars. In addition, his book ‘The Road’ was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and also successfully filmed. His Western All the Pretty Horses won a National Book Award in 1992. McCarthy’s oeuvre is not large. He has written twelve novels, several plays and screenplays. His works are highly praised.

Dark view of the world

McCarthy’s books usually focus on young men, who travel through deserted areas and are confronted with violence. The writer therefore had a dark view of humanity. For example, he often wrote about post-apocalyptic conditions. Connoisseurs consider ‘Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West’ from 1985 as McCarthy’s highlight. The book was included on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1923 and 2005. Also in ‘No Country for Old Men’ from 2005 there is a lot about violence. The book is about a man who is being chased by an assassin. Several of his works featured beheadings, rapes, arson, necrophilia, cannibalism and incest.

“There is no such thing as a life without bloodshed. I think the idea that our species could be improved in some way, that everyone could live in harmony, is a very dangerous idea,” McCarthy said in a rare 1992 interview with The New York Times. The author was very withdrawn and lived in his own world. McCarthy avoided the spotlight and did not lecture.

The writer was given the name Charles at his birth in 1933. He attended the University of Tennessee for two terms, but never completed his studies. He did, however, publish his first stories at that time. His last two books were released in 2022.
