No more crypto donations for Wikipedia

by time news

Two weeks after a vote in the Wikipedia community, the Wikimedia Foundation announced that it would no longer accept donations in cryptocurrencies. The decision is justified, among other things, with the effects of cryptocurrencies, but also with the rampant speculation in the crypto community.

The decision will not have any noticeable impact on Wikipedia’s funding: last year, the US foundation received just 130,000 US dollars in this way. For comparison: the current annual plan envisages spending of 150 million dollars. The foundation had never held the cryptocurrencies itself, but had the amounts paid out in dollars via the Bitpay payment service.

The vote was initiated by longtime Wikipedian author Molly White, who has become an influential critic of the crypto community with her blog Web3 is going just great. However, the last word has not been spoken: In a comment, the Wikimedia Foundation announced that it would monitor further developments.
