Donating money for a meal to a restaurant so that someone in need can eat there – that is no longer possible. The “Dignitos” app is offline, the website and social media channels seem deserted. The appearance on Facebook is even completely discontinued. In 2017, the app of a trio of siblings from Neustadt an der Waldnaab made it into the ZDF Today Journal. Now everything looks like a closed restaurant, through the windows of which remains of the furnishings can still be seen, but inside which nothing has happened since the Corona pandemic.

“The project no longer exists,” explains Jürgen Kost, one of the three siblings, when asked by Oberpfalz-Medien. “The restaurants broke away from us in rows because of Corona. They were the basis of the whole thing,” he explains. Because the concept behind “Dignitos” was simple: people donate an amount of their choice via smartphone to a restaurant that takes part. With these donations, the host then takes over the bill of a person in need. But without the restaurant open, there were no more donations, Kost continues. After that, they wouldn’t have advertised it anymore. Kost runs a database for professional football full-time. “Dignitos” was not profit-oriented, he and his siblings “didn’t earn a cent” with it, doing the whole thing on a voluntary basis.

By the time of the pandemic, the three siblings could have won 64 restaurants. They can still be read on the website: for example the “Beanery” in Amberg and Weiden or “D’Wirtschaft” in Altenstadt an der Waldnaab. There were also several in Hesse and Austria and there was also one participant in Ethiopia. “We’re currently processing it. The website will also go offline in the next 14 days,” says Kost. But he also says: “It’s not yet certain whether it will be launched again.” The co-initiator of “Dignitos” leaves a back door open. The people who can’t afford to go to a restaurant would be happy if he used it.
