The limited number of F-16s and problems with pilot training may force the Ukrainian armed forces to use the fighters in a non-standard way.

There are simply too few fighter jets and too many Russian air defense systems to shoot them down. This means that the first F-16s will most likely be used to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses – to shoot down air targets: missiles, drones and planes.

However, the F-16 was originally expected to destroy ground targets – bases, tanks, armored personnel carriers and enemy personnel.

Oleksandr Syrsky, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, told The Guardian in a recent interview that the F-16s would fly at least 40km from the front line – meaning it was unclear whether they would be able to deter attacking enemy aircraft.

It is stated in the media that in 2024 Ukraine will receive only 20 fighter jets, while Denmark will train exactly the same number of pilots by the end of the summer.

The US reported that the first pilots had already completed training in Denmark on May 24. and were sent to Europe for additional training. According to Deutsche Welle, 12 pilots are involved in this US report.
