No network: Next break – many areas in Vienna without internet

by time news

Friday will probably go down in Vienna’s history as a day of disruption. There had been many power outages days before, and from that morning onwards a global IT failure was causing problems at Vienna Airport, for example. From the early evening onwards, many Magenta customers have to wait for a connection in some areas.

VIENNA. Friday, July 19, will once again show the Viennese how dependent they are on technology. And at the same time, how dependent the systems themselves are on each other. From one hour to early morning, an error with Windows update is causing problems in hospitals, payment systems and even air traffic around the world. In Vienna, at least the airport check-in is affected. My area reported, more on that below.

The next outage occurred in the early afternoon, which was probably felt by a wider part of the population. The internet from the telecommunications provider Magenta is not working, as first reported by “Puls 24”. Several areas were affected.

Result of power failure

If you call the technical service hotline, a pre-recorded message will explain that there are currently outages in the “2nd, 9th, 19th, 20th and parts of the 1st district”. Magenta spokesperson Paul von Groote confirms this in detail to MeinBezirk as well.

“We’ve actually had a network outage since about 2:33 p.m. However, most affected customers should be able to reconnect,” he said shortly before 5 p.m. However, he is not involved this is a Microsoft IT problem; the reason is much simpler: “There is a power outage in the Vienna networks, which also affects one of our nodes.” Magenta is working hard to get the remaining customers online as quickly as possible.

Indeed, according to the disruption information from Wiener Netze, there was another power outage on the other side of the Danube on Friday evening. Areas in Floridsdorf were affected. Vienna’s power grid was disrupted all week.

Most, however, have an underlying influence from the outside, as highlighted in the municipal utility company. Excavation work where underground cables are cut unintentionally is to blame.
