No-scalpel vasectomy is a definitive method that is performed on an outpatient basis, is 99.7 percent effective and allows for a more pleasant sexual life.

After this procedure, can I still get my partner pregnant?

The answer is yes. By ligating and cutting the vas deferens inside the scrotal bag, the passage of sperm is prevented. However, it is still possible to get the couple pregnant; it is necessary to use an alternative contraceptive method for the couple, such as condom or intrauterine device (IUD), and 3 months or 25 ejaculations pass.

Vasectomy figures in Mexico

The head of the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health (CNEGSR), Yolanda Varela Chávez, announced that from 1993 to 2022, 410 thousand vasectomies were performed in the institution’s health units.

He noted that during 2022 the demand for this procedure grew by 66.6 percent compared to 2018, going from 28,478 to 47,455. In that year, the Ministry of Health and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) carried out 96 percent of surgeries performed.

The State of Mexico and Mexico City concentrate the largest number of interventions at the national level, with 5,698 and 5,349, respectively.

Between 2019 and 2022, around 6 percent of men who opted for vasectomies were treated in the medical units of the Ministry of Health; The greatest demand was from people between 30 and 39 years old.

Varela Chavez commented that before undergoing this definitive family planning procedure, 72 percent talked with their partner and 10 percent considered that this decision was personal.

How it is performed?

Currently, there are two ways to perform a vasectomy. The first is known as the incision method, while the second is the non-surgical procedure “no-scalpel vasectomy.” Both methods are simple and will take between 10 and 30 minutes to execute.

The incision method begins by shaving the patient’s scrotal region, and then injecting local anesthesia into the area. The patient will be awake during the operation, but will not feel any pain. The surgeon will then make a small cut at the top of the scrotum. In some cases, he could also make two cuts on the sides.

On the other hand, a no-scalpel vasectomy is not very different from the previous procedure. Its difference is that, instead of an incision to remove the seminal ducts from the scrotum, the surgeon will make a puncture with a special instrument, through which he will carry out the entire procedure.
