We come from chaos and to chaos we will return. The beginnings of the Solar System they were violent, with a multitude of planetary bodies in formation vying for the orbits now occupied by the worlds that survived the initial chaos. And in the future, with a Sun that inevitably changes over time, it is quite possible that some of the planets around us will leave their orbit and hurtle into the others. Nothing in the Universe lasts forever, and neither will our home in space.

But when will that be? A team of mathematicians has just said, in an article published in ‘arXiv’, that not before 100,000 years. The mathematicians from the University of Sofia, in Bulgaria, Angel Zhivkov and Ivaylo Tounchev, decided to make a calculation that is simpler in principle: predict the stability of the Solar System in a much shorter period of ‘only’ 100,000 years.
