Oslo ∙ This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was shared by human rights activist Ales Bialiatsky (60), who is imprisoned in Belarus, and the human rights organizations ‘Memorial’ in Russia and ‘Center for Civil Liberties’ in Ukraine. They won the award for their efforts to promote human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence. The prize money amounting to one crore Swedish kroner (roughly Rs. 7.4 crore) will be handed over on December 10.

Ales Bialiatsky, also a lawyer, was one of the pioneers of the democracy movement that emerged in Belarus in the mid-1980s. Founded in 1987 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Memorial is the largest human rights organization in Russia that has defied the ban. The Center for Civil Liberties was established in 2007 to strengthen Ukraine’s democracy and human rights work.
