The 67-year-old Swedish-born Swante Pebu was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on extracting DNA from human bones dating back nearly 40,000 years. The Nobel Prize Committee announced that Swante Pebou was selected for the prize for his study of the genetic makeup of extinct hominins and human evolution.

It was under his leadership that the DNA structure of Neanderthal humans was discovered and the branch of paleogenetics was formed. Hominins include species considered to be human, human ancestors, or closely related to humans.

American scientists David Julius and Ardem Pataputyan were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2021. They were awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering the receptors that help the brain sense temperature and touch. The award will be presented on December 10.
