Forming an ‘anti-open AI united front’
Jeffrey Hinton, a professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, the ‘Godfather of AI’ who won the Nobel Prize in Physics last year for his work in establishing the foundation for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, expressed his opposition to the conversion of ChatGPT developer OpenAI into a for-profit corporation. . After Tesla CEO Elon Musk filed a suit for an injunction to block Open AI from being converted into a for-profit corporation, the ‘anti-Open AI united front’ appears to be expanding, with Professor Hinton also joining the ranks.
According to the U.S. economic media outlet Business Insider on the 31st (local time), Professor Hinton supported Musk’s lawsuit along with the international youth association ‘Encode Justice’. Encode Justice, an organization that advocates for the ethical development of AI technology, recently asked the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to submit a brief in support of Musk’s lawsuit. Last November, Musk filed a preliminary injunction suit with the Northern District of California to block Open AI from being converted into a for-profit corporation.
Professor Hinton said in a statement supporting Encode the previous day, “Open AI was established as a non-profit organization with a clear focus on safety, and made various safety-related promises in its (Open AI) charter.” He pointed out, “Allowing open AI profit-making corporations that have received benefits sends a very negative message to other entities in the AI industry.” In addition to Professor Hinton, another AI scholar, Stuart Russell, professor of computer science at UC Berkeley and director of the Human Compatible AI Center, also expressed support for Encode Justice.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, also stood in opposition to Open AI, sending a letter to the California Attorney General saying, “It is illegal to enjoy non-profit benefits as a charity and then convert it to a for-profit purpose.”
With even AI scholars taking the lead in opposing the conversion of Open AI into a for-profit corporation, it is no longer possible to guarantee that Open AI will be converted into a for-profit corporation. Open AI announced its official position on December 28 last year, saying, “In order to raise more capital, we will pursue conversion to a public interest corporation with ordinary stocks.” Despite Musk’s filing of an injunction lawsuit, Open AI countered, saying, “They are trying to gain an unfair competitive advantage for the benefit of Musk’s AI startup ‘xAI,'” but as ‘anti-Open AI’ grew in power, the situation became unclear. If the court accepts Musk’s request for a preliminary injunction, it may become difficult for Open AI to convert into a for-profit corporation.
