So, we get to the New York of 2329, where we control the detective of the Department of Lethality, James Karr. Throughout the game, he is assisted by a young police operator, Sara Kai, and together they must unravel an unexpected case that leads the characters into the deepest abyss of the city’s secrets. It is important to mention that one of the central themes of the games is human immortality, which seems to have been achieved in the future. Nobody wants to die shows a world where the rich can afford to transfer the brain from an aging body to a new one, thereby inheriting all of the new body’s allergies, physical disabilities or diseases. Even the main character of the game is around 120 years old and has changed several bodies. It is necessary to highlight that this topic is really skillfully developed in the game and the plot itself and the main intrigue are firmly built on it, which we will not reveal in order to make it more interesting to experience everything yourself.
Another very distinctive feature of the game is its presentation. This is a retro-futuristic world that takes us to the future, where cars fly between endless skyscrapers, but the cars themselves, various objects in the game have retro stylistics. Not only that, everything is wrapped in the dark, brooding atmosphere typical of film noir, which makes this whole combination of Nobody wants to die very unique. In short, it’s a game you probably haven’t played before and it’s worth trying just for its completely different, unusual atmosphere and graphics. Of course, the developers used the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine here, but it can be seen that they used it with a very clear and unique vision that they achieved.
The game itself can probably be called a walking simulator, but in it you will also need to solve very easy puzzles or go around crime scenes while explaining the circumstances. For example, when entering a room to investigate, James will be able to use the detective’s futuristic arsenal – a time warp device, an ultraviolet lamp or a portable x-ray. It has to be admitted that although the game (eng. gameplay) using these devices is simple, it is still very well made and engaging.
For example, the ability to rewind time at various intervals and stop at a specific moment makes it very interesting to explore the case and what and how it happened. For those who like to take on the role of a detective, this will allow them to investigate the circumstances of crimes in a completely new way and connect the details with each other. Also, every such investigation combines the use of at least several devices in a row, so you won’t have to use only one of them – we will follow the criminal’s tracks regularly, and on the way we will be happy to notice, find out or understand another piece of the crime puzzle.
In addition to working at crime scenes, we will also need to later trace the causal relationship between the various components and create a map of the crime. During this part of the game, we will simply place different objects, characters or arguments in a large field and connect them together. Most of the time, Sarah will ask critical questions, and James, with the clues, will have to logically arrange them with our help and derive the answer he is looking for. This element of the game is also engaging – because the solution to the case will never be obvious, but cleverly convoluted and logical.
Finally, without the previously listed gameplay elements, there will be no more interactivity in the game. You won’t have to physically fight other enemies here or overcome any mechanics typical of horror games. It is a fairly slow detective game that easily adapts to the pace of the player, with particularly beautiful environments and atmosphere. It is true that you can really explore the environment quite a bit, explore various details or perform different actions that are optional for the main storyline. So those who like to explore interactive game worlds to the smallest detail will definitely have this pleasure here.
We would also really like to highlight the game’s “film noir”-matching musical background and voiceover of the characters. Although all the voices are really high-quality, the actor who voiced James Carr stands out the most and hits straight into the canons of the genre. In addition, there will be a lot of voiced monologues of the character, where he will look at the city while smoking and paint a picture of it in his mind. Such dark internal dialogues are very reminiscent of the cult Max Payne, so fans of these games can confidently try Nobody wants to die for this reason alone and enjoy the unique voice acting. Accordingly, there are good, well-aimed jokes that lighten up the dark and depressing mood created by the game.
Finally, what is Nobody wants to die like? To be honest, almost nothing from the games – because it is truly unique in its atmosphere, gameplay and “film noir” plot and characters. But if we had to strictly compare, we can say that fans of Cyberpunk 2077, Firewatch, or the recently released Still Wakes the Deep will definitely be impressed with this game. Also, “Nobody wants to die” should really appeal to fans of good detectives or those who like the mood, presentation of the plot and monologues of Max Payne games.
Nobody wants to die isn’t a long game, but among walking simulators, its duration is quite solid: 6-7 hours if we don’t rush through the game and explore it. On the other hand, the price of the game is also adequate for such a duration – it costs 25 euros regardless of whether we want to buy it on the Steam platform or in the stores of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. It’s true that for the time being it has a small discount on these platforms, so the price, especially knowing what this game offers, is very attractive. Therefore, we confidently recommend Nobody wants to die, and we ourselves are eagerly waiting for what the developers Critical Hit Games will offer in the future – because their first pancake was really not bright.
