WELT: Dunkirk, your film about Dunkirk, was mainly set on the battlefield. In “Oppenheimer” the main locations are scientific laboratories and offices.

Christopher Nolan: I wanted to describe the war from the point of view of Oppenheimer and his group of scientists. They reached the battlefield through news broadcasts on the radio. They themselves were isolated and lived in their own world. It was the first time in history that a war was won not by generals but by scientists. And that meant a tremendous change in the relationship between science and ethics, politics and society as a whole. Science had always represented mankind’s striving for something higher.
