An independent autopsy commissioned for 18-year-old Nolan Wells found his cause and manner of death undetermined, while differing accounts from friends and a newly identified witness raise urgent questions about his final hours on Mississippi’s Horn Island following a Fourth of July celebration.
Wells, an 18-year-old Black football player from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, vanished during a holiday excursion to Horn Island with a group of high school friends, all of whom are white. His body was discovered two days later, on July 6, floating in the shallow waters of the barrier island’s northwestern shore.
Weeks after the tragedy, the circumstances surrounding how the teenager entered the water remain fiercely contested. While investigators and family members attempt to construct a coherent sequence of events, divergent narratives from those present on the island have deepened the mystery.
Independent Autopsy Finds Undetermined Cause
At the 117th NAACP National Convention in Chicago, civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced the preliminary findings of a privately funded autopsy. The examination, performed July 10 by Dr. Roger Mitchell, concluded that the cause and manner of death were undetermined pending further investigation.
The independent report noted no evidence of fractures or deep tissue injuries on the teenager’s body. However, it described a red discoloration in the back of Wells’s skull as inconclusive and meriting further review, leaving open the possibility that non-accidental factors may have contributed to his death.

The second autopsy faced significant procedural limitations because the official state examination had already been conducted by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office. According to the independent report, Wells’s body arrived for the secondary examination without organs or neck structures, a standard medical examiner practice that prevented the independent pathologist from directly observing lung water intake or checking for a neck injury.
Conflicting Accounts Deepen the Mystery
Central to the investigation are sharply contrasting versions of what happened immediately before Wells separated from his peers on July 4. Warren Hudson, a close friend who was on the trip, stated on a podcast hosted by Brandon Tatum that the island was heavily crowded with thousands of holiday revelers and that their group was partying and consuming alcohol.
Friends have maintained that the group was forced to rush back to the mainland because their boat was taking on water. According to these accounts, Wells chose to stay behind on Horn Island to talk to a girl, and his companions assumed he would secure a ride back with someone else.
That narrative has been challenged by the family of the young woman in question. The individual has been identified as 19-year-old Katie McCormack, who spoke with Wells briefly on the island. Her sister, Gracie McCormack, disputed the idea that Wells deliberately stayed behind.

The discrepancy has fueled intense public scrutiny. Crump highlighted the contradiction during public statements, noting that while the friends claim Wells opted to stay with McCormack, McCormack understood that Wells was boarding the vessel with his companions.

The case has drawn sustained national interest, amplified by civil rights leaders who point to Mississippi’s racial history.
State officials have yet to release the results of the official medical examiner’s autopsy, which families and legal representatives await as the critical next step in determining the truth behind the teenager’s final hours.
