Non-hotel overnight stays exceed pre-pandemic levels

Las overnight stays in non-hotel accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural houses and hostels) grew by 7.2% in May to reach 10.4 millionwhich exceeds the figures for the same month of 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the figures published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), between January and May non-hotel overnight stays increased by 13.8% from the same period of the previous year and also above the same period of 2019.

The average stay in May, indicates the INE, is 3.8 overnight stays per traveler.

In tourist apartments, overnight stays rose 7.1% in May compared to the same month in 2022; those of residents grew by 0.8% and those of non-residents, by 9.4%.

The average stay rose 3.1%, up to 4.8 overnight stays per traveler; in May, 31.4% of the places offered by the tourist apartments were occupied, 3.2% more than in the same month of 2022, and the degree of occupancy by places on weekends stood at 35, 6%, with a decrease of 0.2%.

Canary Islands is the preferred destination in apartments, with more than 1.6 million overnight stays and an increase of 1.7% compared to May 2022; the Community of Madrid has the highest occupancy, with 73.5% of the apartments offered. By tourist areas, the Costa Blanca is the preferred destinationwith 730,859 overnight stays, and the coast of Barcelona has the highest occupancy rate, with 86.1% of the apartments offered.

Camping and rural tourism

Overnight stays in campsites grew by 9.6% in May compared to the same month in 2022; those of residents decreased by 4.3%, while those of non-residents increased by 26.9%. In the month, 36.6% of the plots offered were occupied, 4.9% more than in the same month of 2022; the weekend occupancy rate reached 38.2%, with an annual decrease of 5%. Catalonia is the preferred destination in campsites, with more than 1.5 million overnight stays, an increase of 11.8% in the annual rate, and Cantabria reached the highest occupancy rate, with 67.3% of the plots offered. By tourist area, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with 637,578 overnight stays, and the Costa Blanca (Alicante) had the highest occupancy rate, with 67.2% of the plots offered.

Regarding the accommodation in centers rural tourismgrew by 3.5% in May; those of residents fell by 5.7% and those of non-residents grew by 21.6%. By communities, the Balearic Islands was the preferred destination, with 171,992 overnight stays, 11.2% more than in May 2022; it also achieved the highest occupancy rate, with 52.7% of the places offered.

In May, 729,775 overnight stays were registered in hostels, representing an annual increase of 2.9%; those of residents decreased by 12.3%, while those of non-residents increased by 15.4%.
