“The reform of justice requires an overall intervention, those proposed by Minister Nordio are only a few first steps, preparatory to the actual reform of justice, the most substantial part of which concerns the separation of careers: the main issue to be resolved”. This was affirmed, interviewed by time.news, by Gaia Tortora, finalist in the literary prize for essay writing ‘Caccuri’ with the book ‘Testa alta e Avanti’ dedicated to the story of her father, Enzo Tortora.

“I stand at the window and observe developments, waiting for this justice reform to finally take place – he explains – The reform also provides for a change to the Constitution and in our country it is never simple or fast. But the first signs announced, from the abolition of the abuse of office to the limitation of the publication of the interceptions up to the abolition of the appeal in the event of a sentence of innocence in the first instance, are important, positive and shareable”.

Forty years after the beginning of the Tortora case, with his sensational arrest in front of the cameras, is everything clear or are there still obscure points to be brought out of the darkness and brought to light? “Unfortunately, not everything is clear at all, on the contrary – replies Gaia Tortora – When a person is accused of non-existent things, it is absolutely not clear why. For many years, the question has been precisely this: why? And there is still no answer , the question remains intact”.

The title of the essay reads ‘Head up and forward’… Were there moments when one’s head lowered, out of resignation, out of the temptation to throw in the towel, out of distrust of justice? “There have certainly been moments of distrust – admits Gaia Tortora – It is obvious that when sentences arrive that go in the direction you do not expect, you cannot maintain faith in the judicial system. But we have never lowered our heads, as he taught our father”.

A historical reconstruction that remains dramatically current, given that the statistics officially speak of three innocent people who end up in prison a day. “And yet, many think the opposite, that there are many guilty on the outside and not so many innocents on the inside… First, we need to read up and not simply hearsay about things that we don’t fully know – underlines Gaia Tortora – L’ public opinion is formed by all of us and often it is not formed through knowledge but through perception, because this way everything is easier, even if perception often does not correspond to reality”.
