The conversations that appear in the file of the Metastasis case show a plan by Leandro Norero to get out of prison and flee to Colombia, to start “from scratch.”

The Prosecutor’s Office file of the Metastasis case has been revealing how the drug trafficker Leandro Norero, ‘el Patrón’, managed his businesses from the Latacunga prison. Through different phones, he had communication with his lawyers to arrange the delivery of bribes and gifts to try to benefit.

But the phones also contain Norero’s personal conversations. His main contact and the one with whom he spoke the most is his wife, the Colombian Lina R. More than 30 bodies in the file contain these dialogues.

In these conversations, there are personal topics, those of your children and your family. They talk a lot about God, but there are also several fights. In addition, they talk about the movements of Norero’s assets to try to “clean” them so that the Prosecutor’s Office does not discover them.

But they also talk about plans. In fact, conversations with Lina R. focus a lot on what they plan to do when Norero is free. Therefore, they plan to sell his belongings and go to Colombia.

“Let’s leave this country”

Norero was arrested on May 25, 2022. According to conversations with his wife, Lina R. was having a difficult time psychologically facing the criminal process for money laundering, in which she was also being prosecuted.

On July 17, when talking about this, Norero proposed to his wife that they leave Ecuador for Colombia and start there “from scratch.” “That’s what I want: to leave here and start from scratch to a place where people are not so prejudiced,” replied Lina R. Then ‘the Boss’ offers his wife to sell all of her properties. “With what I have there, we can buy a nice house, we already have cars around there,” she told him.

What fits is to keep “the building, the land and the farm” as a business, to continue having income. And the idea is to go to Colombia, where Lina R is from. “In my land, money triples,” she responds. “But let no one know anything,” warns Norero. And he tells his wife that everything will take several months.

Selling Norero properties

The conversations between Norero and his wife are thousands. But in them, you can see how they are moving forward to fulfill their plan to leave the country. On July 27, ‘El Patrón’ tells Lina R. that he has already sold several cars and that he has interested parties for two properties: one in Mocolí and one called Mikonos.

The one from Mocolí sells it to a partner identified as “AF”, which would correspond to Armando Flor, another of those linked to the Metastasis case. By August 22, Norero says that he already received the full payment and that he used it, in part, to pay his lawyers.

Communications until September

The chats with Norero’s wife go only until September 4, 2022. That day, ‘the Boss’ orders a new cell phone for his wife to be left with one of his employees, and asks her to install Threema again, the application that they used to communicate.

In the file there are no more communications with Lina R. However, there are other conversations with other contacts to whom she wrote precisely that day to tell them that she changed her phone number. Among them are the lawyers Hélive Angulo and Xavier Novillo, who handled his defense. There are also new conversations with “Husband”, who would be Xavier Jordán according to the Prosecutor’s Office. All conversations in the file stop on October 3, 2022, the day of the riot in which Norero was allegedly killed.
