Norland warns against forceful change of central bank management, denounces threats to its employees

US Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland said that forcibly replacing the leadership of the Central Bank of Libya could lead to Libya losing access to international financial markets.

Norland added during his meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya in the Tunisian capital that threats to the security of the Central Bank of Libya’s employees and operations are unacceptable, as are other sovereign institutions in Libya.

Norland called for resolving differences over the distribution of Libya’s wealth through transparent and comprehensive negotiations towards a unified budget based on consensus.

Norland said that the emergence of another set of confrontations between armed groups in recent days highlights the ongoing risks posed by the political stalemate in Libya.

At the end of the meeting, Norland affirmed his country’s full support for the Central Bank of Libya in the face of these threats and maintaining the stability of the Central Bank in order to carry out its assigned role to the fullest extent.

Identical sources told Libya Al-Ahrar that a decision was circulated within the Presidential Council to suspend the Governor of the Central Bank, Al-Siddiq Al-Kabeer.

According to the sources, the decision was made by presidential decree due to the disposal of financial amounts that were on deposit in one of the countries without legal cover, according to them.

The sources added that the Presidential Council took this step because it has presidential powers, due to the vacancy of the governor’s position due to his previous dismissal and the expiry of the maximum legal term for the governor, estimated at 10 years.

On the other hand, sources close to the governor considered that dismissing or suspending the governor is not within the powers of the Presidential Council, adding that their central relationship with the Presidential Council is special.
