Norovirus outbreak linked to $1-burrito event for Northwestern University students
The Evanston Health and Human Services Department is currently investigating a norovirus outbreak connected to a $1-burrito event held for Northwestern University students. The event, which took place last Saturday between 1 and 8 p.m. with Big Wig Tacos, has led to numerous reports of illness among attendees.
According to the health department, they began receiving complaints from students on Monday reporting symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, all of which are consistent with norovirus infection. The norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In response to the reports, the health department has initiated an immediate and thorough inspection of the food establishment. Big Wig Tacos has also stated they are cooperating fully with the investigation. They mentioned in a news release that while there have been reported cases, they are not certain the outbreak originated at their restaurant, as norovirus outbreaks are more common in settings like colleges and universities. However, they have taken extra steps to thoroughly clean and sanitize the restaurant, with a particular focus on areas that may be susceptible for the transmission of the virus.
