F1, Dutch GP live today | The asymmetric brakes

It is clear that something happened at Red Bull such that, overnight, their magic ran out. It’s impossible to debut in the championship in Bahrain with a crushing victory, leading by over half a minute to your closest rival and, in just a few races, be vulnerable. Max Verstappen has done a lot to continue winning and his RB24 remains a competitive car, but it lacks something that made it invincible. Could it be the asymmetric brakes that the FIA now prohibits?

We may never know if indeed there is a connection between the recent directive from the regulatory body and the surprising decline in competitiveness of the current world champions. The suspicions that the referees are trying to cover up a matter by rewriting a rule are not new in the sport, not at all. And, if this is the case, it should be understood, but not justified.

F1, Dutch GP live | What is the Zandvoort circuit like?

This Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix takes place on the Zandvoort circuit. The Zandvoort circuit is located between the municipality of the same name and Haarlem, Netherlands, on the North Sea, about 15 km west of Amsterdam. The locality is famous for having one of the largest beaches in Holland and for its environment filled with the famous coastal dunes.

The original layout was built in 1948, with designer John Hugenholtz using a mix of permanent tracks and public roads winding through the sand dunes with a length of approximately 4.2 kilometers. It was radically remodeled in the late 80s – shortened to 2.526 km – and in 1999 sections of the primary layout were recovered, expanding to 4.307 km.

F1, Dutch GP live today | The progression of McLaren

Until the last GP in Miami, Red Bull accumulated 195 points, compared to McLaren’s 96, which introduced its first major evolution of 2024 at the American event. Since then, the Austrian team has added 213, compared to 270 from the British team.

Two victories and fourteen podiums testify to the spectacular progression of the squad led by Zak Brown and Andrea Stella when no team is without obstacles with their technical evolution at some point. After the first day of the Dutch GP, Norris and Piastri also realize they have a competitive car on this track, with McLaren having introduced one of the most ambitious packages of the season after Miami.

F1, Dutch GP live today | Carlos Sainz on his signing with Williams

Carlos Sainz arrives in Zandvoort with his personal suitcase of reasons to defend his decision to sign with Williams and the step back that means in the current hierarchy of Formula 1. “The more I waited, the more data I had, more information I had from all teams to make the right decision,” he stated.

“Since I started talking to them a few months ago, they conveyed a lot of confidence and security. Following them in recent years, they have progressed a lot as a team, they are investing a lot to take them back to where they deserve in Formula 1, with clear and strong leadership like James Vowles, with a very clear project and goal that conveyed a lot of confidence and peace to me.”

F1, Dutch GP 2024 live | Fernando Alonso in the preview

In his statements before the Dutch Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has expressed optimism even though things seem complicated for him to repeat last year’s second place:

I’m not completely confident in the car and that is sometimes holding me back, I need to improve. I know that, it’s what I’m going to try to do in these last ten races,” the Asturian driver acknowledged on Thursday.

“I’m not super happy with my season, but I’m much happier than people think,” Alonso pointed out in a personal affirmation this Thursday. “I don’t know what people expect when the car has been fighting with the middle-field teams recently and, still, I’m getting good points.”

Logan Sargeant continues with his particular ordeal in Formula 1. In the return of competition after the summer break, the Williams driver suffered a severe accident in the third free practice session of the Dutch GP, after crashing his car into the wall, which ended up on fire.

The American entered the linked corners very quickly and, after hitting the wet grass from the Zandvoort rains, lost control of his single-seater, which collided laterally against the circuit barriers. The vehicle was completely destroyed, but Sargeant was able to walk away on his own.

The eagerly awaited summer break is over, Verstappen plays at home this weekend. Many fans in orange and wearing Red Bull shirts fill the stands.

However, he hasn’t triumphed since the last Grand Prix in Spain after five victories in the first seven races. Fernando Alonso’s words in pre-season when he predicted little future for Red Bull’s rivals in 2024 seem far away.

In the first race of 2024, Verstappen won from pole, setting the fastest lap and leading every lap of the race. Fortunately, Alonso was wrong. Formula 1 returns eagerly seeking confirmation of the pattern of the last races: Red Bull does not dominate as it did in the past. It’s unfamiliar territory for all their rivals, as the recent Belgian GP reaffirmed.

Fernando Alonso achieved his seventh podium of the season by finishing second at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. The Asturian was again surpassed by Verstappen, completely unattainable except for the final stretch, on a day marked by rain showers.

Pierre Gasly completed the podium due to a five-second penalty for Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz, for his part, finished in fifth place after defending himself from Lewis Hamilton’s last attack. The Madrid driver confirmed once again that his level is higher than that of his teammate, Charles Leclerc.
