by time news

Norsk runner Line Caliskaner delivered an outstanding performance in this year’s Badwater 135 Ultramarathon, also known as the toughest ultramarathon in the world. With extreme temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius and a course that stretches over 217 kilometers, few manage to complete this race. Caliskaner not only finished but won the women’s category and secured an impressive second place overall.

A milestone for Norwegian ultrarunning

Line Caliskaner, who has previously made a mark in several ultramarathons, became the first Norwegian woman ever to participate in Badwater 135. The selection process for the race is shrouded in mystery and strict selection, and Caliskaner was chosen among many applicants.
– I was very surprised. Many apply for several years before they get accepted, she told Aftenposten before the race.

Caliskaner has had an impressive development as a runner. She ran her first four kilometers continuously at the age of 35, and last year she ran a total of about 7600 kilometers. To prepare for the extreme heat in Death Valley, she trained in a mobile infrared sauna at home and spent time in Dubai.

Simen Holvik led, but had to withdraw

Simen Holvik, who last year became the first Norwegian to complete the race and finished second overall, was also a strong competitor in this year’s race. He led for a full 140 kilometers before his body said stop. Holvik explains to NRK that he began to feel dizzy and had stomach issues.
– I had problems with my stomach. There were many signs confirming that I had to think about my health and drop out, says Holvik. He withdrew from the race after 20 hours and 180 kilometers.

– My support team was absolutely amazing. This is for all the underdogs out there, Burke said in an interview with the race organizers.
