RUTSHURU – While much of Rutshuru territory in North Kivu province still remains under occupation by M23 rebels and the regional EAC force, a human rights activist in the area warns of possible displacement boundary markers serving as a boundary between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Aimé Mukanda says he wants to alert national and international opinion that the Ugandan authorities have moved the boundary markers serving as a boundary between the two countries, and this in the Busanza groupement, Bwisha chiefdom, an area under the control of M23/RDF elements.

“It is really deplorable, it is impossible to touch these limits in the absence of the Congolese authorities. We ask the Congolese government to take this alert into consideration and to send a commission of inquiry to Kampala as a matter of urgency. The distance that returned to Uganda after the displacement of these terminals is estimated at more or less 3 kilometers including the pastures and plantations of eucalyptus of our peaceful Congolese population who do not have access to their lands”.

Mr. Mukanda specifies that these operations began on Thursday August 3, 2023. Already in 2018 he had alerted to another case of displacement of boundary markers in the middle of Virunga National Park on the Kagezi/Lake Edward side where the Ugandans had diverted the bed of the Ishasha river which is a sign of the border limit between DRC-Uganda. In this way 7 kilometers of Congolese land had been ceded to Uganda. “The Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) and national park officials have said nothing about this. »
