In the context of enhancing readiness for war, “North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the performance test of various drones,” according to the Korean news agency Yonhap.

According to the agency, “the test saw the drones fly along pre-determined routes, correctly identify and destroy the designated targets, which have the tasks of attacking enemy targets on land and at sea.”

“It is necessary to develop and produce more suicide drones of various types, for use in tactical infantry units and special operations, as well as strategic reconnaissance and multi-purpose attack aircraft,” the agency quoted the North Korean leader as saying.

According to the agency, “Along with the continued development of underwater strategic weapons systems and underwater suicide attack drones, Kim Jong-un also raised the need to proactively introduce ‘artificial intelligence’ technology into the development of drones.”

Kim expressed satisfaction with the tactical and technical features and data of the newly developed drones, and stressed the need to conduct intensive tests of their combat application and equip the units of the People’s Army with them as soon as possible.

It is noteworthy that “the test was organized by the Institute of Unmanned Aircraft of the Academy of Defense Sciences, and the North Korean experiment was conducted at a time when South Korea and the United States are organizing the annual summer “Ulchi Freedom Shield” maneuvers, which are scheduled to end next Thursday.”

In July 2023, North Korea unveiled two new multi-purpose reconnaissance and attack aircraft at an arms fair and military parade, and Pyongyang sent five drones across the border with South Korea in December 2022, one of which breached a no-fly zone near the presidential office in Seoul.
