North Korea Fires Missiles and Drones in Coordinated Drill

North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles, tactical cruise missiles, and attack drones off its eastern coast on September 12, 2026, in a coordinated joint firepower attack drill.

The Korean Central News Agency described the participating arsenal as new combat systems, including attack drones of various kinds, tactical cruise missiles, large-caliber thermal-pressure multiple rocket launchers, and tactical ballistic missiles.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected several short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Wonsan area around 5:20 a.m. local time on September 12, as detailed by Stars and Stripes. The missiles traveled roughly 155 miles before descending into the sea.

Deconflicting Flight Paths in Multi-Directional Strikes

Combining attack drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and rocket artillery presents significant tactical hurdles because each category operates on an entirely different aerodynamic profile. Attack drones move slowly at low altitudes, while cruise missiles follow low, controlled trajectories. Ballistic missiles climb steeply before plunging downward at high velocity, and rocket artillery covers shorter distances in a matter of seconds.

Synchronizing these varied systems requires firing units to share a precise time reference and target set while keeping flight paths separated. Defense analysts note that mixing these platforms complicates layered air defenses because each weapon category introduces distinct radar signatures, trajectories, and engagement windows.

Senior Military Leadership Oversees the Exercise

The live-fire demonstration was directed by senior Korean People’s Army officials, including Pak Jong Chon, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Yu Chang Son, director of the artillery bureau of the General Staff. Kim Jong Un was not reported in attendance.

Yu Chang Son praised the exercise for boosting troops’ morale and sharpening their specialization. State media quoted him as saying the training improves the military’s capability to destroy opposing forces organizationally and structurally once an order is given.

Regional Security Responses and Alliance Exercises

The weekend launches occurred just one day after the conclusion of Freedom Edge 26, a five-day trilateral exercise involving the United States, South Korea, and Japan in international waters near Jeju Island. U.S. Pacific Command stated that the trilateral drills successfully expanded air defense communication and refined real-time data-sharing procedures.

While state media did not formally link the firepower drills to the trilateral exercises, North Korea had previously condemned the Freedom Edge training as reckless in a September 7 statement. In response to the missile launches, South Korea’s presidential office convened an emergency security meeting and urged Pyongyang to immediately stop violating United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Meanwhile, international defense authorities moved quickly to reassure the region. Pacific Command issued matching assessments indicating that the weekend events did not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, territory, or regional allies. South Korean and U.S. authorities continue a detailed technical analysis to determine the exact specifications of the launched hardware.
