In its first such launch since July 1, North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.

Yonhap news agency quoted the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff as saying, “The missiles were detected launched from the Pyongyang area at 7:10 a.m. today.”

The agency noted that “the South Korean military has strengthened monitoring of additional launches, while exchanging information related to North Korean ballistic missiles with US and Japanese authorities.”

Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un pledged on Wednesday to “strengthen the country’s nuclear capabilities to deter any threats from enemies.” On July 2, North Korea test-fired a new tactical ballistic missile capable of carrying a giant warhead. Giant warheads are among the high-tech weapons that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has pledged to develop, along with a spy satellite and solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles.
