First visit by a military commander since the creation of the Ground Operations Command
President Yoon Seok-yeol visited the Army Ground Operations Command on the 21st, the third day of the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise, to inspect the military readiness posture and exercise situation. The Ground Operations Command is a core unit of national defense that commands and controls approximately 250,000 soldiers, more than half of our military. In peacetime, it suppresses North Korean provocations through education and training, combat preparation, and ground security operations, and in wartime, it commands the ROK-US ground forces as the Combined Ground Forces Component Command. This is the first time since its establishment in 2019 that a military commander has visited the Ground Operations Command.
Blue House Spokesperson Jeong Hye-jeon said in a written briefing that day, “(This visit) is to inspect the solid combined defense posture and confirm the successful implementation of the UFS exercise.” The Ground Operations Command inspection site was attended by Ground Operations Command Commander Son Sik, ROK-US Combined Forces Commander Paul Lacamera, ROK-US Combined Forces Deputy Commander Kang Shin-chul, and National Security Office Director Shin Won-sik. After arriving at the command, President Yoon wrote in the guestbook, “The center of the battlefield, the vanguard of unification! I am proud and reassured of the Ground Operations Command soldiers.”
President Yoon, who visited the Combat Operations Headquarters located underground, received a report from Commander Son on the military readiness posture against North Korean threats and the status of UFS exercises. President Yoon emphasized, “The North Korean regime is the most irrational group on earth that can commit provocations at any time,” and “Only our military’s strong security posture can prevent their miscalculation.” He also said, “We must make it clear to the North Korean regime, which dreams of communist unification and is eyeing South Korea, that ‘invasion means the end of the regime. ’”
President Yoon also expressed his gratitude to the U.S. soldiers. President Yoon said, “The ROK and U.S. soldiers who are dedicated to the exercise are the foundation of the combined defense posture and the core of the ROK-U.S. alliance,” and added, “As the commander-in-chief of the ROK Armed Forces, I have full trust in you and hope that you will achieve many results through substantial exercises.” Finally, he chanted, “Let’s go together! We go together.” Commander Son said, “We will strengthen the combined defense posture through the successful UFS exercise and secure overwhelming ground operation capabilities to support peace through strength.”
President Yoon shook hands with and encouraged about 70 ROK and US soldiers participating in the exercise in the operation room of the Combat Operations Center. After taking a photo, President Yoon said, “Peace is always given when we prepare for and prepare for war,” and “There is absolutely no such thing as free peace.” After touring the Dialogue Power Operations Center, President Yoon left the headquarters, clenching his fist and saying, “You soldiers have worked really hard.” The ROK and US soldiers responded to his encouragement by shouting, “Mr. President, fighting!” three times.
