The South Korean Armed Forces announced that North Korea fired a projectile on Tuesday into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “North Korea fired an unspecified projectile toward the East Sea.”
The launch of this missile comes just one week after Pyongyang announced that it had successfully tested a new hypersonic missile.
A missile is classified as hypersonic when its speed exceeds six thousand kilometers per hour, which is five times the speed of sound.
Pyongyang carried out this experiment while United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was visiting South Korea and two weeks before Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20.
