Nearly 800,000 have signed up to fight against the US, North Korea says. The claim came after the reclusive country launched another intercontinental ballistic missile to its many recent launches in response to ongoing US-South Korean military exercises

North Korea says about 800,000 of its citizens have volunteered to join or re-enlist in the nation’s military to fight against the United States, North Korea’s state-run newspaper reported over the weekend.

About 800,000 students and workers from across the country have expressed a desire to enlist for the first time or re-enlist in the army to face the United States, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported.

“The rising enthusiasm of young people to join the army is a demonstration of the young generation’s unwavering desire to mercilessly wipe out the war mongers who are making last efforts to eliminate our dear socialist country, and to achieve the great goal of national unification without mercy. A failure and a clear expression of their passionate patriotism.” written in the newspaper.

North Korea’s claim came after it launched its intercontinental ballistic missile last Thursday, the latest of many missiles it has launched in response to ongoing US-South Korean military exercises.

Pyongyang fired the missile into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan last Thursday, hours before South Korea’s president flew to Tokyo for a summit discussing ways to deal with the nuclear-armed North.
