The Ministry of Unification announced on the 2nd that North Korea did not respond to two attempts to contact the government regarding its proposal to provide flood relief materials to the North.
A Ministry of Unification official said that they attempted to contact the North twice through the inter-Korean joint liaison office channel at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. that day, but there was no response.
The channel has been virtually disconnected since April of last year, but the government is attempting to contact the North twice a day in accordance with the inter-Korean agreement.
North Korea’s state-run media, including the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Workers’ Party of Korea, also did not respond to this issue on this day.
Kim In-ae, deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, said in a regular briefing this morning about North Korea’s lack of response, “We will not prejudge the situation and hope that (North Korea) will respond quickly to our proposal.”
The government proposed to the North the day before to provide aid materials related to flood damage in the Yalu River area.
Park Jong-sul, Secretary-General of the Korean National Red Cross, announced the previous afternoon that “from the standpoint of humanitarianism and brotherhood, we are willing to quickly provide urgently needed supplies to North Korean displaced persons in response to the humanitarian difficulties they are facing,” and expressed hope for a prompt response from North Korea.
The government’s proposal for flood relief to North Korea is the first in 12 years since 2012. The Yoon Seok-yeol government attempted to propose working-level contacts in May 2022 regarding cooperation in preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), but North Korea did not respond.
