Reply to September 9th congratulatory letter… Possibility of North Korea-China ‘big event’ lowered
North Korean Workers’ Party General Secretary Kim Jong-un sent a reply message to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who sent a congratulatory message on the 76th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean regime (September 9). In his reply message, General Secretary Kim mentioned the long-standing friendly relationship with China and expressed his will for “solidarity,” but did not include any mention of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between North Korea and China.
The Rodong Sinmun, the organ of the Workers’ Party of Korea, reported on the 22nd that General Secretary Kim Jong-un sent a reply on the 15th, stating, “I express my gratitude for Comrade General Secretary’s heartfelt congratulations on the 76th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”
General Secretary Kim said, “It is the common desire of the peoples of the two countries to continuously strengthen and develop the DPRK-China friendship, which has a long historical tradition.”
He stressed, “I believe that the joint undertakings of the two parties and the two countries of the DPRK and China to vigorously promote socialist construction, provide real welfare for the people, and safeguard world peace and regional security will continue to produce excellent results in the future.”
He also said, “I hope that the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China with Comrade General Secretary at its core, will achieve greater success in building a modern socialist country this meaningful year marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.”
Compared to the letters exchanged around the same time in previous years, this one contains a similar amount of writing, but some say it appears to be a somewhat concise reply compared to the congratulatory messages sent by the mayor in January and September.
In particular, General Secretary Kim flaunted the special relationship by declaring this year as the “Year of North Korea-China Friendship” to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in a letter exchanged last January.
However, North Korea-China relations have been quiet since January. There has been no news of any events related to the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
The two leaders have been building a close relationship by exchanging letters on occasions other than official national anniversaries, but this year, the amount of exchange has decreased significantly compared to previous years, and there is continued analysis that there is something wrong with North Korea-China relations. This seems to be because North Korea is placing more importance on exchanges with Russia, and is feeling uncomfortable with China about this.
