WHILE, Waspada.co.id – The women’s doubles pair from the host North Sumatra (Sumut) Alda/Vina have ensured their qualification to the last 16 of the table tennis branch at the 2024 National Sports Week (PON).

In the match which took place at the Angsapura Medan GOR, Monday (16/9) morning, Alda/Sofie won three straight sets (3-0) over the Gorontalo pair Fitri/Anna.

However, the women’s doubles’ progress to the next round was not followed by the men’s doubles pair Agung/Michael who lost to the Lampung pair, Naiel/Braydon with a score of 0-3.

North Sumatra table tennis coach, Andika said that there is indeed a big opportunity in the women’s doubles. Given that in the women’s doubles the strength is quite even. While the men need struggle and hard work to be able to compete.

“Our men’s and women’s doubles still have a chance to win the gold medal around 50 percent.. Yes, but must work hard. Nothing is impossible in a match. Everyone has a chance,” said Andika.

According to him, the toughest competitors still come from a number of provinces, such as DKI Jakarta, East Java, and West Java.

“Because, in every championship, these three regions are always the champions or always get medals,” he said.

As a motivation to his students, Andika always gives encouragement. Moreover, the status of the host is an advantage in itself.

“We came here not only as participants. But, we came here to be winners and must continue to fight,” said Andika. (wol/man/d2)
