JERUSALEM ∙ Just as the ceasefire talks were about to begin in Doha, Qatar, Israeli forces again entered al-Shifa, the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip. The army opened fire when it entered the hospital where about 30,000 people had sought shelter. 80 people were arrested. The raid was alleging that Hamas had once again turned the hospital into a base. Hamas denied the accusation.

Last November, Israeli forces seized the Al Shifa hospital, but were unable to produce evidence that a Hamas command center was located there. This is the fourth time since October that the army has entered Al Shifa.

The United Nations World Food Program has warned that starvation could occur in northern Gaza anytime between this month and May. Famine has gripped northern Gaza, where nearly half of the population (over 11 million) is starving without food. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report stated that 2.10 lakh people out of more than 3 lakh people are on the brink of starvation.

The IPC, a coalition of UN agencies and voluntary organizations, assesses and reports on famine anywhere in the world. In December, the IPC warned about the spread of famine in Gaza. 31,726 people have been killed in Gaza so far in Israeli attacks. 81 people were killed in the last 24 hours.

The head of the UN’s Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said in Cairo that the famine in Gaza was “man-made” and that efforts were being made to stop it from spreading. Meanwhile, Israel rejected Lazzarini’s request to visit Rafa. EU representative Joseph Borrell said Israel continues to obstruct food delivery efforts.
