The Armed Forces of Norway and Sweden have signed an agreement with the Norwegian state railway company Bane NOR for the purchase of new railway wagons for transporting military equipment.
The company’s press service reported on this.
The cooperation agreement addresses the new transportation needs of Norway and Scandinavian countries.
The purchase of new freight wagons will enhance the capacity to transport heavy military equipment by rail, including new main battle tanks.
This agreement is expected to significantly improve opportunities for military rail transport within and between Norway and Sweden, as well as to other European countries.
Common procurement requirements ensure that the railway wagons will be of the same type and will meet the military needs of both Norway and Sweden, as well as applicable regulations.
It is noted that when the Norwegian railway wagons are not used by the Armed Forces, they can be utilized for the needs of the railway company Bane NOR and can also be leased for non-military freight transport.
The military are pleased with the new cooperation agreement, believing it strengthens the joint defense capabilities of both countries.
Amid security threats in Europe following a full-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, the ability for rapid cross-border transport of military equipment to ensure joint defense is very important.
