Norway calls on its nationals present in France to avoid gatherings

Oslo – Norway on Friday urged its citizens in France to avoid gatherings of large crowds, due to the violence that has rocked the country for three days following the death of a teenager by police.

“There have been riots in several places in France in recent days, including in Paris,” the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a text message sent to Norwegian travellers who registered on an official app.

“Norwegian travellers are advised to take all necessary precautions, including staying away from large gatherings of people and demonstrations,” it added.

In a brief statement published on its official website, the ministry also urged travellers “to exercise particular caution and listen to the advice of local authorities”.

France is a popular destination for Norwegians. Last year, a year still marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, some 268,000 people travelled to France from the Scandinavian country, according to the Norwegian Institute of Statistics SSB.
