Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide Declines Storting Re-election to Make Room for New Talent

– Today, I informed the nomination committee of the Oslo Labour Party that I do not wish to seek re-election to the Storting, writes Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap) in a post on Facebook.

Barth Eide goes on to say that he wants to make room for the next generation of political talents:

– The Oslo Labour Party has a number of talents who should now get the chance to try themselves in key political positions. It is important to build teams in politics and to think long-term, he continues.

Not stepping away from politics

Barth Eide has served as Minister of Climate and Environment during the period 2021-2023 in the Støre government. In 2023, he became Foreign Minister after Anniken Huitfeldt had to step down.

Although the Foreign Minister is not running for election to the Storting, he will not be stepping away from politics:

– I am very motivated to continue working in the government and to ensure that we win the election next year. And if the party wants, I would be happy to continue as a minister when we win the election. I am not tired of being involved in politics, he tells Dagsavisen.

Earlier this week, Knowledge Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun (Ap) also informed that she did not wish to seek re-election to the Storting, but was open to continuing as a minister if the opportunity arose.
